It is my pleasure to offer this beauitful Art Nouveau cast silver brooch, highly detailed. The graceful female profile is presented by a twisted oval frame. The brooch is 1 1/2" tall and 1 1/4" wide, and I believe the pin was replaced a long time ago, from a C-clasp to a more secure pin. This would have been worn at the collar, bodice, or sash. There is some tarnish, and I imagine this piece would polish very well, but did not want to disturb the antique patina.

I love clothing that is both feminine and comfortable, and this easy to wear top by French Dressing Jeans (with tags still on) gets points in both categories!

The blush pink is flattering to most skin tones, the batwing sleeve creates an elegant silhouette, and the length is a soft drape to just past the hips & bum. There are taupe and black accent lines nicely placed at the elbow and in slimming verticals down the front. You could pin this top shut with a brooch if you like, however, unlike many other similar open front styles I've tried on, this one actually looks very nice as is. Layers very well over a long-sleeved tee, a cami, or a blouse.

Art Nouveau brass Pierrot & the Moon hand mirror: $30

Pierrot is a character whose origins go back to the 17th century. A figure of naivete and hopeful (though unreturned) love, he is often depicted with his only friend, the moon. This antique Art Nouveau handheld brass mirror shows Pierrot and Pierrette reaching for the moon.

Some of you may know the song "Au clair de la lune," and be familiar with the verse that includes the name Pierrot. Did you know that this song has also been recorded as a bawdy folk tune? If you re-read the lyrics, it isn't too hard to see the double entendre ;)

The mirror measures 9" in length, and almost 5" across at its widest point.

This very pretty vintage Japanese vase stands 11" tall and features two peacocks within a floral setting - I can identify chrysanthemums and calendula, and something that looks quite daisy-like as well. This is a remarkable collection of small vintage dental bottles, ranging between 1" and 3" in height, and made from a variety of plastic and glass materials. Many of them have the original product still intact - everything from solvents and desinfectants to dental cements and porcelain powders used in the making of implants and veneers. I would strongly advisde against opening any of the bottles without researching the safety of doing so.

They're mostly from the 1940s-1960s and are a joy to the lover of retro and vintage typefaces. There are 20 in this set, though only 19 are visible in the photo, there is one other bottle, tucked away behind the others in the top row.

*SOLD* Robin's egg blue and rich red is my favourite vintage colour combination, so my eyes lit up like nobody's business when I encountered these beauties at an estate sale this weekend.

The large round tin on the left was used to store silver polishing supplies for decades, but dates to the 1930s and was originally used as a fruit cake tin. The lettering on the front surrounds a dark haired gal, and it reads "POM Holy Day Fruit Cake." The lettering on the interior reads Harrions Brothers Limited, POM HALL, MONTREAL. This remarkable tin is 10" in diameter and stands 3 1/4" tall.

The smaller tin on the right is unmarked, stands 6" tall and 5" in diameter. It is gloriously adorned with roses, marigolds, and other blooms in dusky pinks, golds and apricot.

Attention old-timey music aficionados! Have I got a treat for your ears! This is a functional 1920s wind-up gramophone, made in England, by Antoria. The box certainly shows some wear on the exterior (oh the stories this puppy could tell!), but the pieces are all intact, and it even comes with over 20 extra needles. The curve of the playing arm is a thing of beauty - very Art Deco! The whole thing weighs about 15 lbs, so can be totted to a bash with not too much difficulty.

The gramophone comes with two delightfully scratched up records, and the sound it produces is an aural exercise in time travel. It requires no electricity, all you do is insert the winding handle, crank it up, release the brake, place the needle, and enjoy! I'll gladly provide a demo, though this fellow does a decent job with a very similar model.

Two rather lovely gold-tone vintage necklaces up for grabs! The longer one is signed Monet and measures a loopable 52" in length. The shorter one is a 1950s style with a dozen faux drop pearls - this piece is quite influenced by Art Nouveau designs, it measures 20" in length and is unsigned. The two necklaces look very well together, but can also be worn separately.

I used it in conjunction with the terra cotta base to keep a few small succulent plants - but then an adventuresome kitten started showing too avid an interest in the set up, so onto the Trove it goes! Dear Trovers,

Am off for some last minute shopping madness, but before I do, I wanted to wish you all a hale, hearty & happy holiday! The Trove updates will be back in a week or so - whenever my turkey and cookie filled self can lumber towards a keyboard again.

In the good news department:
I passed my driver's road test a couple of days ago! This means I'll be able to expand my treasure-hunting perimeter by quite a bit and I'm quite excited about this! I'm already looking forward to spring (I know, we JUST got a smattering of snow), so that I can explore all the pretty little towns of upstate New York and Vermont and bring the treasure back to the Trovers!

Looking forward:
The Trove focus will be shifting towards vintage leather bags, home decor items, books, and jewelry - though the occasional exceptionally gorgeous item of clothing will make its way onto the site, I won't be stocking as much in the Trove room itself.

Ladies & gents, it has been a pleasure to rustle up goodies for you and your homes, and I hope the next few days are particularly stuffed with loved ones, scrumptious food & drink, and many many wonderful moments!

1927 edition of "The Week-End Book: A Sociable Anthology": $10

The preface describes this book as "a book of clues to good life for week-end pairs and parties." This is the 17th impression of this anthology, printed in 1927 by The Nonesuch Press. Within its venerable pages are (according to the table of contents) Great Poems, Hate Poems, State Poems, Epigrams, and more, including my favourites: First Aid in Divers Crises & The Law and How You Break It. It comes with its original book jacket, and the inside covers are a draughts board and a Nine Mens Morris board.

SOLD Large vintage 1940s-50s wooden chest: $100

This beautifully distressed chest was made right here in Montreal by Emery-Talbot Ltd. In 1948, their original building burned during what was dubbed "Black Week-end" in the Montreal Gazette due to the number of fires which took place in the city. I believe this box dates from slightly after the fire. Whoever owned it (the mysterious H.B.) marked the inside with important dates in his/her life, from the moon landing (marked "Man on the moon 1969" inside the lid) to various move dates around the city.

This is a lovely item, and would function very well as a coffee table/ games/ blanket storage in the living room or den, or as a bench/ storage space in a front hall, or as a blanket box in the bedroom. The original brass hardware is all present and functional, and the handles on the side make it easy to transport.

The interior smells quite nice, not musty at all, I believe it may even be cedar but can't be 100% certain.

This small mid-century piece by Cole Steel is just the thing for adding a vintage industrial accent to a room. At its current height, it would function very well as an unusual bedside table/ desk if space is at a premium. If you'd like to use it as a standard desk, I would advise that you add casters (easily found at Canadian Tire). The drawers slide out easily and the knobs are quite cute in their way :)

Pale blue leather-covered jewelry box, with gold accents on the top, and a charming mustache-shaped handle. The interior divided tray makes it easy to organize your baubles, and there is a hidden compartment on the bottom. There is some damage to one corner, as well as a few scratches and wear marks, but considering that this item is over forty years old, it is in quite good shape.

Kitten's starting to feel more comfortable in her new home and is spending much less time under the couch, which leads to photo opps like the one above. She doesn't have a name yet, though when I walk into the living room to find her like this, her name may as well be a series of barely suppressed squeaks interspersed with babbly baby talk. SO CUTE.

In other news...it turns out Mama-cat may be PREGNANT. Which means she was cooking up her little oven buns when we first brought her home, WHICH MEANS WE MIGHT GET KITTENS FOR CHRISTMAS. Sohrab and I are anxiously inhaling info about how to prep for brand new feline lives in our home, but as it turns out, mama-cats do pretty much everything. This also means that come late February, early March, we'll be looking for homes for the little darlins.

Tea & Trove success, and introducing the new kittehs!

Sunday's Tea & Trove in Old Montreal was a sparklesome & flavourful success! Thirty guests arrived over the afternoon, some with menfolk and kidlets in tow, and my amazing hubby didn't leave the kitchen ONCE in three and half hours. Whenever I looked over the happily shopping & munching crowd of Trovers, Sohrab was brewing up a fresh pot of tea, cutting up more sandwiches, or topping up the fruit - all while amiably chatting with the gals at the milk, lemon & honey tea -dressing counter. Pictured above is what was left of the 60 scones, 40 banana chocolate mini-muffins, and 80+ Coronation chicken sandwiches that Sohrab and I had whipped together that morning.   I can't thank my lovely hubby or our elegant co-hostess & her handsome husband enough for their unflagging good spirits and whirlwind energy over the course of the event!   Most of all, my thanks to all the wonderful gals who filled the light-filled loft, made purchases (I am now privy to dozens of secret holiday plans!), and stayed to enjoy a light tea.   It was a real pleasure to see you all!

In other Trove news, there are two new as yet un-named kitties who have made themselves quite at home in the apartment. My friend Gen sent me a video of a momma cat and her three six week old kitties who had been left to fend for themselves in a backyard, just as the nights were starting to get cold. Gen has numerous pets of her own, and wasn't able to keep them - as soon as I saw their little furry faces, I knew I was in trouble!    My sister and her fellow have two of the kittens, and Sohrab and I decided that momma cat and the smallest kitten should try our place on for size.

We haven't found names for them yet, but I had a bit of a giggle fit last night deciding that perhaps I'd name them after some of my favourite things.   Some of the names which haven't made the cut:
